The photo above shows a "blow out" at Broomhill Burrows. When people walk through the dunes, usually to get to the seashore, they tend to trample the marram grass which should hold the sand dune together. When the marram grass rhizomes are broken and the sand is churned up by feet the sand is easily blown away by the wind. Once the sand starts to get blown away the problem just gets worse. The Field Studies Council centre at Orielton has information about when each blow out happened and it is very interesting to see how the blow outs are re-colonised by couch grass, marram grass, fescues, ladies bedstraw and other plants. There are some interesting projects here for "A" Level biology students.
